In Search of the Perfect Software Solution
s difficult as it might be to accept that a promising software project
is not after all feasible, it is far worse to find that out only after
expending time, money, and effort on the project. This manufacturer and
retailer of unique clothing designs hoped that a custom software system
would help them address some of the administrative and strategic challenges
of their business.
- Great saving of time,
money, and effort
- Clarification of software
needs
- "Custom" software without the large price tag
In the case of businesses today, it's often very difficult to wade through so
many technological options to choose the best solution. When
this happens, we might think that customizing a solution is the best way
to get what we want. And we are resigned to the fact that customization carries
a high price tag. CSG's client, a retail clothing company, was looking
for technology that would best allow it to operate within its business
objectives. They believed that the development of custom software was
the most appropriate choice -- how else could they get what they needed? The
client called in CSG to develop the perfect software solution.
Given the high cost and uncertainty inherent in
software development, it's wise to stop from time to time and ask
oneself whether a custom software solution is worth the commitment.
CSG helped them clarify their
needs and quantify the potential gains to be had. After
quickly sketching out an outline for a custom system that would
meet the client's needs, CSG then estimated the cost. The client was easily able
to determine that as appealing as the custom software solution seemed, it was
not the best use of their money. Instead, CSG was able to
mold an off-the-shelf program to effectively meet the client's needs.
