glossary
Application

Short for "Application Program" or "Application Software." Refers to software designed to fill a specific user need, as opposed to software that is required in order for a computer to operate. Off-the-shelf programs, such as word processors, spreadsheets and accounting programs, are applications, as are custom programs developed for a company's specific needs. By contrast, "operating system" software is required in order for a system to operate but does not by itself perform any useful function. "Utility" software is used to maintain a computer system, and "development tools" are used by programmers to create new software.
